WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW

Linfield Ladies will kick off their UEFA Women's Champions League campaign tonight, as they face three big games in the next week.

The UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying round kicked off today across Europe, with 40 clubs competing for the 12 remaining places in the 32-team knockout phase.

The 40 clubs are split into ten groups of four with Group 1 taking place in Belfast this week. Current Danske Bank Premiership Champions Linfield were successful in their bid to once again host the group stage of the competition.

This year the Blues take on Dutch giants Ajax, Icelandic side Thor/ KA and Wexford Youths from the Republic of Ireland. Seaview is hosting the group stage and the first game kicked off this afternoon (2pm) between Ajax and Wexford Youths. Linfield take to the pitch later in a 7.30pm kick off Vs Thor/ KA.

Linfield enter the group as the lowest seeds but will hope to take confidence from their dominance in the Premiership so far this season.

Thor/ KA, their opponents tonight also enter the competition riding high currently sitting second in their league, one-point shy of first.

Ajax are currently in their off-season but will no doubt still be a threat with six Dutch internationals in their squad who recently won the European Championships.

Wexford Youths enter the competition for the third time after winning the Women’s National League in 2017. The team boasts a number of senior Irish internationals and they currently sit 9 points clear at the top of their division.
