Sarah Venney lifts aloft the Danske Bank Women's Premiership last season (c) Presseye


Linfield Ladies’ have been dealt a blow ahead of the start of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership season with the retirement of captain Sarah Venney.

The announcement came via the official Linfield website as the decorated 33-year-old has confirmed she will not be participating in the 2019 Women’s Premiership season for the defending champions.

Linfield stated: “All great football careers end in retirement and in the past week, an inspirational Linfield captain has called time on an outstandingly successful Linfield career.

“33 year old Linfield Ladies captain Sarah Venney has informed her team mates and coaching staff of her intention to retire and bring the curtain down on a Linfield career which ran parallel with the phenomenal success which the team has enjoyed in recent seasons.”

Northern Ireland international Venney led her Linfield side to victory in both the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership and League Cup last season as well as the qualifying group of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

It was a third consecutive league title for the central midfielder who also boasts three Irish Cup medals, three League Cup medals and also four from the County Antrim Cup during her time with the Blues.

Linfield start their defence of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership on Wednesday 17 April at home to Sion Swifts Ladies at Midgley Park (kick-off: 8pm).
