Glentoran Belfast United started off their league campaign at The Showgrounds with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Newry City Ladies.

The Glens moved in front on 22 minutes after a succession of corners when Samantha Kelly delivered a perfect cross for the unmarked Kelly Bailie to head in at the back post.

The remainder of the first half was very much low key, with the majority of the pressure coming from the visitors. Newry's midfield seemed to have lost their way and were unable to get a grip on the game.

The second half stared very much like the first with no clear cut opportunities and both teams enjoying possession.

A great last ditch challenge from Bailie prevented what turned out to be Newry's only opportunity of the second half. As a result Bailie took a bad knock which forced her to be substituted, but the depth of Glentoran's squad this year saw them bring on Nadene Caldwell.

Glentoran then extended their lead when Newry 'keeper Dhebora Barbosa conceded an indirect free-kick after picking up a backpass which debutant Ali McMaster fired into the top corner.

Newry continued to press Glentoran trying to find an opening but could not produce a finish.

The third and final goal came from another debutant, Rebecca McKenna. The ball fell to McKenna, who noticing the 'keeper had strayed off her line, calmly lofted the ball into the back of the net.
