Cliftonville Ladies welcomed Newry City Ladies to Solitude on Wednesday evening for their first meeting of the season.
Newry came into the game after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Glentoran. The visitors started brightly and rattled the cross bar on 5 minutes when Kate Flood hit a long range free kick which Reds keeper Callaghan could only watch fizz over her.
The Down side looked the more likely to take the lead with their Brazilian contingent combining well and causing the Cliftonville defence problems.
After only 20 mins their pressure paid off when Brazilian Rayza de Souza found herself free and made no mistake with her sweet strike giving City the lead.
That was followed only minutes later by a super strike from 25 yards by local girl and Northern Ireland international Moya Feehan.
The visitors continued to pile on the pressure and it wasn’t long until de Souza got her second when the Reds failed to clear. Again she found herself unmarked and finished from close range between post and keeper to make it 3-0 just before the break.
The Reds started the second half brightly and Billie Simpson could count herself unlucky as the crossbar came to the aid of Newry just after the restart.
Cliftonville continued to dominate but without creating any clear cut chances.
Celine Curtis continued to press and enjoy possession but found herself as a lone attacker too often with not enough red shirts getting into the box to support.
Just over the mid point in the second half Reds Megan Wetherall received her marching orders after picking up a second yellow card for persistent fouling.
The night was about to get even worse for the home side, when former Cliftonville starlet Trudi Harbinson secured the win, finding herself free on the edge of the 18 yard box and making no mistake with her strike leaving Caomihe Callaghan helpless.
