CLASH OF THE TITANS PRODUCES FOUR GOALS
Glentoran Women and Cliftonville Ladies remain unbeaten and top of the Sports Direct Women’s Premiership after a pulsating draw in front of a record breaking 868 strong crowd at Solitude.
In a highly anticipated clash of the top two, the Reds raced into an early lead on 13 minutes with captain Marissa Callaghan sliding in at the back post to turn home Caitlin McGuinness’ low cross.
They doubled their advantage six minutes later, as Danielle Maxwell converted from a free kick.
The end of the first half fizzled out, but Glentoran came out a transformed side in the second period.
They pulled a goal back when Caragh Hamilton coolly slotted home after latching onto a misplaced pass from Callaghan.
The Glens continued to grow into the game and came close to equalising when Chloe McCarron’s fierce strike from a well worked corner routine deflected off Fi Morgan and landed narrowly wide.
The visitors made the next corner count, with Demi Vance bundling the ball home to haul Glentoran level.
Cliftonville were indebted to their goalkeeper Rachel Norney for preserving a point, as she made a terrific double save with three minutes remaining.
She first tipped Emma McMaster’s free kick away from goal, before then getting down low to deny Joely Andrews, as the Glens were forced to settle for a point.
