RAMPANT REDS ROLL ON
Cliftonville Ladies made it 10 wins from 10 games as they extended their lead at the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership thanks to a four-goal victory over Linfield Ladies.
The Reds took advantage of Glentoran Women not playing to move eight points clear at the top of the standings, although the North Belfast side have played one game more.
Caitlin McGuinness – one of eight former Linfield players in the Reds starting line-up – scored a superb hat-trick for John McGrady’s side, as Marissa Callaghan added a fourth from the penalty spot as Linfield finished the game with 10 players following Rebecca Bassett’s red card.
McGuinness appeared to get the vital last touch on Marissa Callaghan’s low driven cross to open the scoring just after the half-hour mark, before she bundled home a second on 54 minutes, after Linfield had failed to clear an in-swinging corner.
The young striker would complete her hat-trick on the hour mark with a clipped finish into the far corner beyond Lauren Currie after springing the offside trap.
The Blues’ night went from bad to worse when Rebecca Bassett was shown a straight red card for dissent just two minutes later.
Captain Callaghan then sealed the three points for the Reds when she tucked home from the penalty spot in the 66th minute after Currie had fouled Abbie Magee in the area.
