REDS OPEN UP GAP AT THE TOP
A Louise McDaniel doubled helped Cliftonville Ladies go two points clear at the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership as they beat Mid Ulster Ladies 8-0 at Solitude.
Marissa Callaghan, Toni Leigh Finnegan, Caitlin McGuinness and Megan Moran were all on the scoresheet for John McGrady’s side, before Abbie Magee and Kelsie Burrows both got in on the act with their first Cliftonville Ladies goals.
Callaghan opened the scoring with barely five minutes on the clock as she lobbed Lillie Crooks, who had come a long way off her line.
The home side doubled their advantage three minutes later with Finnegan firing home a stunning bending strike from the edge of the box.
McGuinness then added a third on 12 minutes, finishing on the rebound after Crooks had denied her sister Kirsty’s initial effort.
Moran made it four in the 20th minute, slotting home from a corner before McDaniel slammed home a fifth just past the half hour mark.
Mid Ulster almost pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart when goalkeeper Crooks saw her looping effort from a long range free kick crash off the underside of the crossbar.
The visitors managed to restrict the Reds from scoring again until the 67th minute when Magee arrowed a shot into the far corner after meeting Kirsty McGuinness’ low cross.
McDaniel got her second and the Reds’ seventh when she curled home from a cut back on the right hand side of the box.
Substitute Burrows completed the scoring with nine minutes remaining as she prodded home the rebound after Callahan’s shot was saved by Crooks.
