NELSON DOUBLES SINKS GLENTORAN TITLE HOPES
Crusaders Strikers produced one of the shocks of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership season as they ended Glentoran Women’s slim title hopes.
Northern Ireland international Julie Nelson netted a double for the Crues in East Belfast and while Makyla Mulholland netted a late consolation for the Glens, Spike Hill’s side held on for the points.
In what was a game with few chances for either side in the first half, a tremendous free kick from Nelson near the halfway line sparked the game into life. It evaded Glentoran keeper Ashleigh McKinnon, hit the crossbar and rebounded off the unlucky keeper to nestle in the back of the net to give the Shore Road women the lead.
The Strikers went further ahead with a second goal for Nelson who this time was left unmarked in the penalty area and from a corner headed home to double the lead.
The Glens got back into the game through a penalty from Mulholland after a handball incident in the penalty area.
