CAPTAIN KANE BAGS DERBY WINNER AS GLENS CLAIM BRAGGING RIGHTS
Marcus Kane grabbed the only goal of the game as ten-man Glentoran got the better of leaders Linfield at the BetMcLean Oval.
Although Glentoran enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges it was Linfield that came closest to breaking the deadlock when, midway through the first half, their first effort on goal saw home keeper Daniel Gyollai stretch to turn a Joel Cooper effort onto an upright.
But the Glens perhaps deservedly went in at the break on top after Kane blasted the ball home from close range after Daniel Amos' corner was only partially cleared.
The game took another twist with around a half-an-hour remaining following James Douglas' dismissal for a challenge on Jamie Mulgrew, his second caution of the game.
And Linfield almost made their extra man count straightaway after Matthew Fitzpatrick teed Dane McCullough up on the left but his strike was well kept out by Gyollai.
Then, not long after that, Kirk Millar went close for Linfield with a free-kick from the edge of the area that fizzed just past the left post.
The Blues had another chance as the game ticked over to the final ten minutes with Josh Archer squandering an opportunity with a ball over the top from a great position inside the box.
However despite continuous pressure the visitors couldn't find a way past the dogged - and at sometimes frantic - home defence.
