RANGERS RECOVER TO CONFIRM NEWRY'S FATE
Carrick Rangers stormed back from going behind early on to defeat Newry City at The Showgrounds, a result that confirmed the home side's finish at the bottom of the table.
Newry had the ball in the net within 20 seconds although this was ruled out offside, but they did move in front as early as the third minute when Ciaran O'Connor touched the ball home after it rebounded off him from Adam Salley's pass.
But Carrick hit back after half-an-hour through Curtis Allen after he connected with Danny Gibson's flick from a Ben Tilney throw-in to knock the ball past keeper Conor Mitchell.
The visitors doubled their advantage on 37 minutes. As Gibson worked his way into the area he was brought down by Mitchell and, from the subsequent spot-kick, David Cushley stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.
It got worse for Newry not long after that when they were reduced to ten men following Fra McCaffrey's dismissed for a challenge on Cushley.
Then, in first half stoppage time, Gibson hit Carrick's third after picking the ball up on the halfway line, bringing it forward and making no mistake from inside the box.
With the game effectively over as a contest after the break the second half was a lot more uneventful, although Carrick did come close to adding a fourth around a quarter-of-an-hour from time when Emmett McGuckin turned a header from a corner against the crossbar.
