McGUCKIN AT THE DOUBLE FOR CARRICK
Emmett McGuckin grabbed both goals as Carrick Rangers defeated Newry City at The Showgrounds.
The visitors created the first notable effort of the game through Nedas Maciulaitis who connected with a Ben Tilney pass but saw his header saved by Steven Maguire.
At the other end Philip Donnelly blasted an effort wide of the left post before, a little later, Dale Montgomery raced through on goal but could only fire the wrong side of the upright.
The deadlock was broken, however, in favour of the visitors midway through the first half when Alex Gawne found McGuckin with a right-sided pass and he duly unleashed a strong volley past Maguire from inside the box.
McGuckin then doubled his tally a couple of minutes into the second half after getting a touch to low Tilney pass.
Lloyd Anderson came close to adding a third not long after that, but his strike from distance went just wide of the left post.
James Teelan squandered an opportunity to pull one back for Newry after a mix-up in the Carrick defence but he could only send his effort the wrong side of the target.
Maguire produced a great save to deny Tilney, tipping the ball over after it looked destined to find the back of the net before a later effort from the former Larne man took a deflection into the arms of the keeper.
Newry's hopes of salvaging something from the game effectively ended in the remaining few minutes after Daniel Hughes was dismissed for a challenge on Tilney, his second caution of the evening.
