McAREE ERA OFF TO A WINNING START
Rodney McAree kicked off his time in charge of Glentoran by overseeing a 3-1 defeat of Newry City at The Showgrounds.
Jay Donnelly almost opened the scoring early on with a header but this was ruled out offside.
However it only took Niall McGinn seven minutes to break the deadlock after directing a close range finish past Steven Maguire, with Patrick McClean nodding wide soon after that as the visitors continued their powerful start.
Shay McCartan then threatened with distance, while McGinn saw a looper header gathered at the back post.
Newry did have their chances, and came close to equalising through John McGovern only for keeper Aaron McCarey to just about stop the ball crossing the line.
But the Glens doubled their lead four minutes from the break when Donnelly did get his name on the scoresheet with a perfectly executed effort after spotting Maguire off his line from distance.
The home side pulled one back just three minutes into the second half through James Teelan who connected with a Thomas Lockhart pass and then sent it past McCarey after the keeper came out to shut down the danger.
And Newry were handed a further boost not long after that when Glentoran were reduced to ten men after McClean was shown a red card for bringing down McGovern who was through on goal.
Donnelly restored Glentoran's two-goal advantage with his second of the game just before the hour, this time from close range after the ball fell for him following a scramble in the box.
Newry did try to make their extra man count, and had two decent efforts as the second half progressed with McGovern being denied by an alert McCarey while substitute Donal Rocks was kept out from close range.
