PURKIS STRIKE ENOUGH FOR GLENAVON
A Daniel Purkis goal at the end of the first half was enough to hand Glenavon victory over Warrenpoint Town at Mourneview Park.
Glenavon started brightly with Purkis sending a volley just over after a couple of minutes with the same player denied just a few minutes after that by keeper Gabriel Sava.
Peter Campbell came close on 19 minutes from a Calvin Douglas free-kick only for the ball to strike the post and fall to safety while, at the other end, only a perfectly timed Aaron Harmon tackle stopped Brandon Doyle from finding the net.
However Glenavon went in at the break on top when, on the stroke of half-time, Purkis pounced on a poor backpass from Colm Deasy to round Sava and slot home.
Greg Moorhouse almost doubled Glenavon's lead on 56 minutes with a header from Robert Garrett's cross which Sava did well to turn onto the crossbar while Moorhouse was unable to fire home the rebound after the 'Point defence failed to clear.
Sava was in action again to thwart Harmon's low left foot shot, and later in the game, did well once more to deny Matthew Snoddy from an acute angle.
Ryan Swan almost levelled for Warrenpoint in stoppage time after sliding in to meet the ball at the back post but couldn't quite direct it on target.
The visitors were reduced to ten men right at the end of the game when Dermot McVeigh was dismissed for bringing down James Singleton.
