CARRICK SWEEP TO IMPORTANT WIN OVER 'STUTE
Carrick Rangers collected their first points of the new season with a two-goal win over Institute at the Brandywell.
James Ferrin fired Carrick in front on 14 minutes with a header from Stewart Nixon's pinpoint corner.
And Nixon's influence almost led to Carrick adding a second soon after when he dispossessed a 'Stute defender before finding Lloyd Anderson but the ball ended up in the side netting.
Institute had a chance to level midway through the first half when Dean Curry headed just wide from Brendan McLaughlin's cross.
'Stute were reduced to ten men four minutes from the break following Aaron Jarvis' dismissal for a challenge on William Faulkner, his second caution of the game.
The home side kept pushing for the equaliser in the second, coming close through Evan Tweed who saw his effort inside the box blocked for a corner.
It became ten-a-side soon after when Carrick's Abiola Sanusi was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Thomas McBride moments after coming on as a substitute.
A couple of minutes after that McLaughlin hooked over a Joe McCready knock down but, with four minutes to go, Mark Kelly cut inside to find the bottom corner and secure the points for Carrick.
