Conal Burns (57p)
Conal Burns (71)

Newington had an early chance when, inside the first ten minutes, a poorly placed Andrew Wilson backpass was pounced upon by Conal Burns and whilst he took the ball past 'keeper Tuda Murphy he lost control and the chance was gone.

The visitors might have found a way through later in the half when Stephen Acheson turned a Stephen Greene header against an upright while, not long after that, Neil Clydesdale was played through by James Wilson. He elected to take a shot on goal himself when laying the ball off to unmarked team-mates Ryan Moffatt and Kevin Anderson might have paid greater dividends.

The deadlock was broken 12 minutes into the second half when Newington were awarded a spot-kick for handball and, despite protests from the visitors, Burns kept his cool to opening the scoring.

Padraig Scollay came close to adding a second only to fail to make the most of the opportunity after meeting a Sean McAuley cross.

However, Newington did double their advantage on 71 minutes after Burns evaded his marker to connect to a free-kick from the left to score from close range.

Banbridge pushed hard to salvage something from the game, coming closest late on when Stephen McCavitt burst into the box but was let down by a poor finish.
