This week NIFL club representatives benefitted from the first stage of an exciting UEFA led programme for Supporter Liaison Officers (SLOs).
The SLO Education Programme in collaboration with UEFA and Football Supporters Europe (FSE) provides NIFL clubs with the tools, knowledge and skills needed to tackle the complex challenges of the job.
Held at the National Stadium at Windsor Park, this new UEFA Academy programme was created in response to the increasing demands of a role that is now a fundamental aspect of the football.
Well trained and recognised SLOs bring clubs closer to their supporters, providing a two-way flow of information on current issues. By ensuring that supporters’ voices are heard, SLOs can build trust and a sense of community; while helping fans to experience the game they love in the best possible conditions.
Sophie Glendinning, NIFL Competitions and Operations Lead said; “Supporters are the heartbeat of our league and play a major part of our strategic objectives within the NI Football League, so we’re delighted to be delivering this new programme to our clubs.
“Thanks to all the club Supporter Liaison Officers who attended the two-day workshops, as we look forward to continuing with this programme seeing how our clubs and league can learn and benefit.
Herjan Pullen, UEFA Supporter Liaison Officer Project Coordinator; “The UEFA SLO Education Programme offers SLOs a chance to develop the knowledge, skills and tools needed to thrive in their position. It highlights UEFA’s dedication to strengthening the role that is a requirement for clubs competing in UEFA club competitions.
“SLOs act as a crucial bridge between fans and their club, facilitating dialogue, communication and building trust. Their impact extends beyond relations and ultimately enhances the experience of all involved in the game.”
From Lena Gustafson Wiberg, FSE Head of SLO Development & Training: " The UEFA SLO Education Programme is a crucial way for FSE to support and organise the work of SLOs in each UEFA nation by helping to deliver training that is specific to Northern Ireland's needs.
“The passion and energy in the room from the SLOs and all that contributed was really clear to see, and we're already looking forward to returning for the second edition of the course."
In the first of a two-part programme the club representatives will gain a deeper understanding of the SLO’s role and responsibilities, tools and techniques to work with all stakeholders and build strong network of fellow SLOs in Northern Ireland.
