Dundela caused the shock of the BetMcLean Cup first round with a 2-1 defeat of Crusaders at Wilgar Park.
Benny Igiehon opened the scoring for the Duns with a low drive into the opposite corner before the break, with Eamon Fyfe adding a second with seven minutes remaining.
Jarlath O’Rourke pulled one back for the Crues soon after to set up a grandstand finish but Niall Currie’s side held on to progress.
There was almost another upset at the Limavady Showgrounds. The Roesiders held Premiership visitors Newry City to a scoreless draw after 120 minutes but exited the competition 5-4 on penalties after City keeper Niall Brady made a crucial save.
Holders Cliftonville travelled across Belfast to take on HW Welders at the Blanchflower Stadium. Ronan Hale opened the scoring with less than half-an-hour on the clock with Joe Gormley making sure after the break with a double.
Last season’s losing finalists Coleraine progressed to the last 16 with a 4-0 home win over Dergview. Evan McLaughlin started and finished the scoring with Michael McCrudden and Matthew Shevlin also getting their names on the scoresheet.
In a night of goals, it fell to Glentoran to claim the top scorers accolade with a seven-goal haul at home to Institute. Jay Donnelly kicked the scoring off midway through the first half with Aidan Wilson and Conor McMenamin striking moments from the break. Hrvoje Plum added a fourth on 50 minutes before Danny Purkis bagged a double and Alistair Roy rounded things off with ten minutes remaining.
Glenavon hit six without reply past Dollingstown at Mourneview Park. Four up at the break thanks to Josh Doyle, a Conor Scannell double and a Micheal Glynn finish through a crowded area with further goals coming courtesy of Aaron Prendergast and Matthew Snoddy in the second half.
The game was also notable for the second half appearance of Glenavon’s Christopher Atherton who, at just 13 years old, became the youngest ever player to play senior football in the UK.
Carrick Rangers, Loughgall and Portadown all hit five – and kept a clean sheet - at home.
Curtis Allen, Emmett McGuckin [2], Andy Mitchell and Aodhan Gillen got on the scoresheet for Rangers as manager Stuart King came up against former club Banbridge Town while Loughgall have Nedas Maciulaitis [2], Ben Magee, Mark Patton and Ryan Masterson to thank for their goals against Knockbreda.
Meanwhile, for the Ports, Oisin Conaty hit a hat-trick as they swept past Armagh City at Shamrock Park. Jordan Jenkins – from the spot – and Zach Cowan grabbed the other goals.
Larne’s Matthew Lusty also claimed the match ball with three goals in the 5-1 defeat of Lisburn Distillery at Inver Park. Lusty opened the scoring on 20 minutes with the Whites levelling moments later through Matthew Swann. However, Lusty struck again on 27 with Sean Brown hitting another just after the half-hour mark before a Stephen Curley own goal and Lusty's third wrapped the goals up midway through the second half.
Linfield recorded a similar scoreline away to Moyola Park. Niall Quinn edged the Blues in front on the half-hour before Jake McNeill levelled almost immediately for Moyola. However goals either side of the break for Kirk Millar and Andrew Clarke put David Healy’s side in the driving seat with further strikes from Eetu Vertainen and Robbie McDaid adding to the tally.
Dungannon Swifts were held at the break by Queen’s University at Stangmore Park before James Convie hit a brace just after the hour and Brendan Barr knocked in a third while Annagh United – with goals from Craig Taylor, Conor Mullen, Stephen Murray and Scott McCullough – swept past Bangor at Clandeboye Park.
Elsewhere, Ballyclare Comrades came from two down to defeat Ballinamallard 4-2 after extra-time at Dixon Park, and a Luke Walsh goal was enough for Warrenpoint Town at home to Newington.
The first round concludes on Wednesday evening when Ards play host to Ballymena United, kick-off 8pm.
