Glentoran Women suffered penalty shootout heartbreak against Olimpia Cluj in the Women’s Champions League clash in Romania.
The Danske Bank Women’s Premiership champions enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and chances – having 11 shots to Cluj’s four – throughout the game but could not break the deadlock as the game ended scoreless.
Kerry Beattie and Caragh Hamilton were two big threats for the visitors throughout the game, with the latter hitting the post with her effort eight minutes after the break.
Yet despite their territorial advantage, the Glens had goalkeeper Ashleigh McKimmon to thanks for a vital save deep into extra-time to keep the tie scoreless and take the clash to penalties.
It was an energy-sapping two hour encounter player in humid conditions, with the Glens ultimately bowing out 4-2 in a penalty shootout as the hosts converted all four of their opportunities.
Billy Clarke’s side will now take on Maltese champions Birkirkara FC in a third-placed playoff on Sunday – their opponents were defeated 4-0 by Bosnian league winners SFK Sarajevo.
