What a day it proved to be in the Danske Bank Premiership as Cliftonville came from behind, Larne bagged a stoppage time winner and both Ballymena United and Coleraine kept clean sheets on the road!
The afternoon took less than eight seconds to roar into life when Ronan Hale fired the Reds into the lead straight from the kick-off at Solitude against a shell shocked Carrick Rangers.
Stuart King's side recovered to lead at the break through goals from Lloyd Anderson and David Cushley late in the first half before Ryan Curran levelled for Cliftonville from the spot on 53 minutes.
But it fell to who else but Joe 'The Goal' Gormley to settle the outcome with a 70th minute winner less than sixty seconds after taking to the pitch as a substitute for Colin Coates.
Glenavon finished with nine men for the second game in a row as they lost 2-1 at home to Larne.
The sides traded goals in the latter part of the first half with Paul O’Neill’s 33rd minute opener being cancelled out by Micheal Glynn.
That was how it stayed until Gary Hamilton’s side suffered the loss of Calum Birney and Jack Malone within 12 minutes of each other midway through the second half.
However, just as it looked Glenavon would hold on for a draw the visitors were awarded a 96th minute spot-kick which Ben Doherty duly tucked away with the last kick of the game.
Coleraine continued their winning start to the season with a 2-0 win away to Portadown.
Both goals came courtesy of Matthew Shevlin. His first came after 20 minutes after getting on the end of a Conor McDermott delivery before the pair doubled up early in the second half for a headed finish into the bottom corner.
And it was also a successful road trip for Ballymena United who have second half goals from Josh Kelly and Conor Keeley to thank for their defeat of Dungannon Swifts on the first game to be played on the new Stangmore Park surface.
Meanwhile, Glentoran defeated Crusaders 3-1 on Friday evening at the BetMcLean Oval. Ross Clarke fired the Crues in front as early as the fifth minute but Ruaidhri Donnelly, Conor McMenamin and Aidan Wilson all struck to turn it around for the home side.
The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon when Newry City host Linfield at The Showgrounds, kick-off 2pm.
