Carl McComb netted twice as Ards safely negotiated their way past Newry City in this Northern Ireland League Cup second round tie.
Newry created a lot of the early running with Kevin McArdle coming closest after being allowed to run through the home defence before getting a good effort in on goal.
However, as the game progressed, Ards found their feet. Guillaume Keke saw an effort saved by City 'keeper Peter Murphy, Callum Byers had a shot blocked, Gareth Tommons came close with a pile driver and Keke had another attempt scrambled away.
After the break, Newry's Neil Mullen forced McAuley into parrying a shot onto the crossbar while, at the other end, Murphy turned a Jordan Hughes effort around the base of an upright.
The deadlock was finally broken on 65 minutes when Carl McComb was brought down in the area. He duly composed himself sufficiently to slot home the subsequent spot-kick, giving Murphy no chance.
Newry levelled five minutes after that, again from the spot, when Jimmy Walker converted after Mark Hughes had been fouled by Greg Hall.
Ards moved back into the lead seven minutes from time when David McAllister broke down the left before firing home from 20 yards out.
McComb then made sure for Ards right at the end of normal time with his second of the night, a side foot finish from a Tommons delivery.
