The BetMcLean League Cup also kicks off this weekend with four first round ties as the road to silverware starts here!
There is a County Armagh derby in the League Cup first round as Lurgan Celtic host Armagh City at Knockramer Park. Last season the hoops were relegated from the Bluefin Sport Championship, but start this season with renewed optimism with former Northern Ireland international Gerard McMahon taking over during the summer, the first of two Premier Intermediate League clashes in this round will be his first competitive game in charge.
At Newforge Lane, Banbridge Town are the visitors to Championship side PSNI. Stuart King has been promoted to manager of the County Down club and they will be looking to build on a top half finish in the third tier last season.
There’s an all East Belfast encounter at Wilgar Park as the Championship pair go head-to-head for a place in the second round. The furthest Dundela have gone in the League Cup competition was the quarter-finals (twice) in 1988/89 and 1991/92.
The final tie of the BetMcLean League Cup sees 2010/11 winners Lisburn Distillery make the short journey down to the Upper Malone Road venue to face Peter Thompson’s Queen’s University outfit. The clash pits two of the early season favourites for the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League against each other in the opening game of the season.
The second round will take place on Tuesday 28 August with all the Danske Bank Premiership clubs entering the competition.
