Two Mark Sykes goals helped Glenavon to victory over Ards at Mourneview Park and into third spot in the table.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring on 13 minutes. A Nathan Hanley corner was cleared by Rhys Marshall as far as Andy Mitchell who laid the ball off for Bobby Burns who, in turn, found Josh Daniels down the right before he played Sykes through to knock the ball past Aaron Hogg with confidence from inside the area.

Glenavon's second arrived six minutes after that when Jamie Singleton's long throw-in from the left came off the head of Ards' Johnny Taylor and into his own net.

Andy Hall might have added a third with a well executed free-kick from distance which Hogg did well to tip over.

Ards thought they had pulled a goal back early in the second half when Michael McLellan knocked the ball beyond Johnny Tuffey only for referee Steven Gregg to rule the 'goal' out offside.

And in sucker punch for the visitors they fell further behind just a few minutes after that with Sykes' second of the game with a weaving run through the defence following Burns' touch on from Marshall's throw-in on the right.
