STUTE MARK TOP FLIGHT RETURN WITH FIRST DAY WIN

Institute marked their top flight return with victory over fellow promotees Newry City at The Brandywell

The sides traded chances during the opening exchanges. 'Stute skipper Michael McCrudden tested Steven Maguire with a left-foot strike while Newry's Dara Noonan headed wide at the back post from a Mark Hughes corner.

However, McCrudden grabbed what proved to be the opening goal of the new campaign on 17 minutes with a confident finish past Maguire after Aaron Harkin had found him with a ball behind the defence.

The visitors might have levelled just after the half-hour mark when another Hughes delivery found Declan Carville but his close range header dropped wide.

After the break Newry's Conal Delaney combined well with Stephen Hughes, finishing the move with a 20-yard effort which took a deflection off Caoimhin Bonner.

McCrudden will feel he should have doubled Institute's lead on 66 minutes but could only send the ball wide of the target after Maguire had done well to keep Callum Moorehead's initial effort out.

Newry's last chance at crafting an equaliser came eight minutes from time through Darren King but he could only blast over.
