Institute came back three times to earn a point from Glentoran's visit to the Brandywell.
John Herron opened the scoring for Glentoran after a quarter-of-an-hour when he steered the ball home from six yards after the home defence failed to clear.
'Stute levelled six minutes later, however, after Michael McCrudden found Ronan Wilson who drilled the ball across the face of goal from the right only for Dylan Davidson to turn it into his own net.
Glentoran regained the advantage on the stroke of half-time after a ball was looped high into the box to which Robbie McDaid got the final touch to see it over the line.
Back came Institute four minutes into the second half thanks to Aaron Harkin's pinpoint free-kick which curled beyond Elliott Morris into the top corner.
But Glentoran moved into the lead for a third time on 63 minutes with McDaid's second of the afternoon after controlling a through ball to beat Martin Gallagher into the top corner from an acute angle.
Yet Institute responded once more with just a couple of minutes to go through Joe McCready who left Morris helpless with a curling shot from the edge of the box.
