Ballymena United midfielder Michael Gault has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

The former Linfield captain and seven-time Danske Bank Premiership winner, was reunited with his former boss David Jeffrey at the Showgrounds in May 2017 following his departure from Crusaders.

Capped by Northern Ireland, 34-year-old Gault also had a spell at Portadown following the end of his trophy laden spell at Windsor Park in which he also won the NI Football Writer’s Player of the Year award in 2008.

Speaking the Ballymena United official website, Jeffrey advised that the player now needed surgery: “we have come to an agreement with him that works out best for player and for club. We will assist Michael in his treatment but mutually have agreed to cancel his contract to allow him the time to recover and get ready for next year.”

Michael Gault made 14 appearances for the Sky Blues in all competitions this season.

Next up: Ballymena United welcome Carrick Rangers to the Ballymena Showgrounds in the Danske Bank Premiership this Saturday (13 January) – kick-off: 3pm.
