Danske Bank Premiership duo Mark Sykes (Glenavon) and Jamie McGonigle (Coleraine) were part of the Northern Ireland Under-21 team that claimed a famous victory over Spain tonight in the European Under-21 qualifiers.

Ian Baraclough’s young side raced into an early two goal lead thanks to Shayne Lavery and captain Liam Donnelly and held their lead throughout despite a saved penalty and a stoppage time consolation for the home side.

Sykes started the game and featured for the full ninety minutes, whilst McGonigle was a second half substitute for goalscorer, Lavery. Glentoran’s Nathan Kerr was an unused substitute in the tie in Albacete.

The victorious Under-21 team also include Heart of Midlothian’s Bobby Burns (ex-Glenavon), Queen’s Park Rangers’ Paul Smyth (ex-Linfield) and captain Donnelly previously at Dungannon Swifts.

The victory leaves Northern Ireland Under-21's third in their qualifying group.
