Michael McCrudden hit two goals to secure victory for Institute over Warrenpoint Town at the Brandywell.
McCrudden had a chance after eight minutes with a curling effort but he couldn't stop the ball going over the bar.
Indeed, a similar fate befell an Alan O'Sullivan ambitious effort for the visitors while Aaron Harkin also saw a shot go too high.
The visitors were reduced to ten men after half-an-hour when Danny Wallace was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Jamie McIntyre.
'Stute moved in front six minutes later after McCrudden was brought down inside the area by Eamon Scannell before dusting himself down and stepping up to tuck away the resultant spot-kick.
Stephen Curry had an opportunity to make it 2-0 early in the second half after finding some space before the Warrenpoint defence snuffed out the danger.
However, McCrudden did double Institute's lead just after the hour with a sensationally executed volley from around 25 yards to leave keeper Berraat Türker helpless.
