Cliftonville have delivered their fans an early Christmas present with news that club record goalscorer Joe Gormley has signed a three year contract extension.

Gormley is the Danske Bank Premiership’s leading marksman this season with 18 league goals, which included his landmark 170th for the Reds back in October which broke the 57 year club record.

Having initially signed from Crumlin Star in 2011, Joe is in his second spell at the club having endured a short injury hit spell in professional football with Peterborough United and St. Johnstone.

Reds Chairman Gerard Lawlor told the club’s official website; “He has been a reliable and consistent goalscorer in both of his spells with the Club and I know that this news will be a huge Christmas boost to our supporters.

“A lot of hard work has gone into getting this contract signed, sealed and delivered and the Committee here at Solitude are delighted that their efforts have achieved the desired result.”

The news comes as a welcome boost to the club amid speculation of a potential transfer for Gormley, they will be buoyed by the news going into Wednesday’s derby clash with Crusaders at Solitude (kick-off: 3pm).
