HEARTBREAK FOR STUTE AFTER GRIPPING SEAVIEW FINALE

Crusaders snatched a dramatic victory from Institute's visit to Seaview in a gripping finale to this Danske Bank Premiership clash.

Rory Patterson opened the scoring for Crusaders as early as the fifth minute with a powerful, slightly curling shot from outside the box into the top corner to give 'Stute keeper Martin Gallagher no chance.

Institute responded well, however, and might have levelled when Joe McCready went racing through only to be denied by a smart save from Harry Doherty.

Indeed, the visitors grew into the game the more it progressed and could well have equalised just before the break when Michael McCrudden's powerful drive was well tipped over.

Crusaders came within a whisker of doubling their lead early in the second when Ross Clarke crashed a 52nd minute effort off the crossbar.

But, just two minutes after that, Institute finally got their equaliser when skipper McCrudden converted from the spot after he had been upended by Colin Coates.

Boosted by this, Institute were thwarted by Doherty again just before the hour with McCready and McCrudden combining for the former to have a go from a tight angle.

Only some resolute defending denied Coates a short time later before 'Stute were denied by the woodwork with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when Ronan Doherty turned a left-foot effort onto the right upright.

Crusaders edged back into the lead with five minutes to go through Paul Heatley who burst through the defence to slide the ball past Gallagher one-on-one.

However, a couple of minutes after that McCrudden levelled for 'Stute for a second time after the ball bounced around the edge of the box.

Then, five minutes into stoppage time, David Cushley was upended by substitute Jamie Dunne and, from the spot-kick that followed, Patterson stepped up to bang home that dramatic winner.
