A Joe Gormley goal late in the first half proved to be the difference in this north Belfast derby at Seaview.
He struck five minutes from the break after collecting an Eamon Seydak throw-in before taking the ball past David Magowan and beating Sean O'Neill with a thunderous drive.
Crusaders had the first effort of note early in proceedings when Jordan Owens fired just over from a free-kick.
At the other end Gormley threatened with a low drive which O'Neill did well to keep out with his legs.
And the Crues 'keeper produced another great stop later in the half when he got down low to turn away another Gormley attempt.
The Crues came storming out of the blocks after the break with Josh Robinson seeing an early effort saved by Conor Devlin.
Paul Heatley came closest of all, though, with a superbly executed volley which smashed against the underside of the bar as Stephen Baxter's side probed for the equaliser.
However, O'Neill had to be at his best again after that when Jude Winchester came in from the left to have a go with a low strike.
