Rory Donnelly helped himself to a hat-trick as Cliftonville swept to a 4-0 defeat of Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park.

The Reds seized the early advantage when, after nine minutes, Donnelly beat the offside trap to get on the end of a through ball to send a neat finish beyond Andy Coleman.

Dungannon thought they had levelled on 20 minutes when Paul McElroy had the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out offside.

Cliftonville extended their lead early in the second half when, on 53 minutes, Jaimie McGovern found Donnelly at the back post and his downward header went across 'keeper Coleman into the net.

Then, six minutes after that, he grabbed his hat-trick with a successfully converted spot-kick, sending Coleman the wrong way, after the referee spotted a handball in the area.

And it was 4-0 on 67 minutes and a second penalty for the Reds when Joe Gormley, a replacement for hat-trick man Donnelly, fired low into the bottom left corner.

The Swifts squandered the opportunity for a stoppage time consolation when Paul McElroy failed to convert from the spot after Peter McMahon had been tripped by Levi Ives.
