Crusaders moved to the top of the Danske Bank Premiership following this defeat of Institute at Seaview.
However, Stephen Baxter's side had to do it the hard way, twice coming from behind whilst 'Stute also missed a penalty.
Diarmuid O'Carroll might have fired the Crues in front on 21 minutes only to fire a Gary McCutcheon cross wide from close range.
'Stute opened the scoring five minutes after the break when Stephen O'Flynn prodded the ball over the line after his initial effort was blocked by Sean O'Neill and Billy Joe Burns.
Crusaders levelled through Paul Heatley six minutes later with a sweetly struck volley into the top corner.
But O'Flynn fired 'Stute back in front just sixty seconds after that with a header from Stephen Curry's cross.
Back came the Crues and Heatley again on the hour with another top volley delivery from another McCutcheon ball.
O'Flynn squandered a glorious opportunity with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining when he fired wide from the spot after Gavin Whyte was adjudged to have impeded Declan McKeever.
And 'Stute were punished barely three minutes later when substitute Jordan Owens - only on the pitch a couple of minutes - headed home what proved to be the winner from a Chris Morrow corner.
