Linfield maintained their perfect start to their Gibson Cup defence with this defeat of Ards.

The Blues raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening half-an-hour.

First, on 19 minutes, Mark Haughey smashed the ball into the net after the home defence failed to react to a Kirk Millar curling free-kick.

And Millar got his name on the scoresheet himself nine minutes later with a stooping header from Paul Smyth's left-sided cross.

Ards came close to pulling a goal back early in the second half when Scott Davidson faced Roy Carroll one-on-one only to turn his effort against the inside of the post.

Kyle Cherry came close for Colin Nixon's side on 70 minutes with a header as Ards continued to try to salvage something but they couldn't overturn those two first half goals.
