Curtis Allen's first half double helped Glentoran defeat Newry City in a Friday night encounter at The Showgrounds.
The opening exchanges were somewhat scrappy with neither side gaining the upper hand, although Newry did enjoy more possession albeit without threatening the Glentoran goal.
However, that all changed on 22 minutes when Allen opened the scoring for the visitors.
Defender Thomas McCann was dispossessed by Darren Murray who, in turn, laid the ball off for Allen to get past Darragh Noonan and send a right-foot effort into the bottom corner beyond Andy Coleman.
Newry came close to levelling a quarter-of-an-hour later when Noonan did well to get his head to a Josh Durnan corner but the ball struck the Glentoran crossbar.
But Glentoran doubled their advantage four minutes before half-time. Gavin Peers created the opening, flicking on a long throw-in, for Allen to show true poachers instincts to stab the ball over the line after reacting quickest to the opportunity.
Allen had an opportunity early in the second half to grab his hat-trick with a free-kick but Coleman proved equal to the challenge with a comfortable save.
Chasing the game, Newry might have pulled one back on 69 minutes when John Boyle connected with a Rushe corner but keeper Elliott Morris made the save.
Allen had one final chance at claiming the match ball in the closing moments only to be denied by Coleman's outstretched leg.
