Institute edged to a narrow victory over HW Welders at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Liam Mullan opened the scoring for 'Stute after 13 minutes with a side footed effort from just the box into the bottom corner.
The Welders levelled six minutes later, however, when James McClay blasted an unstoppable effort past Bryankizito Uzoukwu from distance.
But what proved to be the winner came midway through the first half when Mark Mbuli slotted past keeper Michael Argyrides.
