ANNAGH BLOW TITLE RACE WIDE OPEN
Annagh United issued a huge signal of intent in the race for Lough 41 Championship honours with a three-goal defeat of leaders Newry City at The Showgrounds.
The win leaves Ciaran McGurgan's side just a point off the top in second spot, albeit having played a game more than Newry.
Annagh needed just three minutes to open the scoring when Stephen Murray latched onto a poor backpass and did enough to slip the ball past keeper Steven Maguire into the corner of the net.
The visitors doubled their advantage midway through the first half when the ball fell loose for Aaron Rogers from another Murray effort.
Then, ten minutes before the break, Adam Carroll added a third with a header from a Niall Henderson corner.
The first half ended on a somewhat sour note for Annagh when they were reduced to ten men following Christian Stewart's 42nd minute dismissal for a professional foul.
Despite having a numerical advantage after the break Newry were unable to break down a resolute Annagh defence and, indeed, as time ticked down the home side became increasingly frustrated in front of goal as it became obvious they were going to slip to a fifth home defeat of the campaign.
