LATE GOAL RULED OUT AS IT ENDS SCORELESS AT THE SHOWGROUNDS
Newry City and HW Welders played out a scoreless draw in front of the Friday night lights at the Newry Showgrounds.
After a settling in period during which both sides were restricted to half chances the Welders had perhaps the best opening when Matthew Ferguson hooked the ball over the bar in front of goal after Ross Arthurs had won a header inside the area.
At the other end Mark McArdle knocked a free-kick forward onto which Mark McCabe turned but Welders keeper Ryan Miskelly managed to turn it away for a corner while, a short time later, Darren King attempted a volley from the edge of the area but Miskelly was well placed to gather.
Newry came even closer as the first half progressed when Mark Kelly smashed an effort against the bottom of the post after a John Boyle deep free-kick had been knocked on into his path.
After the break, Newry keeper Andy Coleman had to get down to turn away a low effort from distance while, for the home side, Kelly nodded over at the far post after McArdle had lifted the ball into the box.
Stephen Moan saved Newry later in the game with a goalline clearance during a scramble which saw both Adam Wright and Ferguson attempt to find the net from an Alan McMurtry free-kick from wide on the right.
The Welders did have the ball in the net in the closing moments when Ferguson pounced on another McMurtry free-kick but this was ruled out offside.
