Newington manager Conor Crossan saw his side stretch their unbeaten run to five games

Newington stretched their unbeaten run to five games with victory over a Banbridge Town side that have lost their last four league outings in a row.

Robbie McVarnock opened the scoring on 26 minutes when, following a move down the left, he crept in unmarked to confidently send the finish past Gerard McErlean.

Banbridge responded quickly and were unlucky when Ryan Moffatt's in-swinging corner hit the bar and was cleared to safety.

McVarnock extended Newington's advantage with a successfully converted spot-kick on 72 minutes awarded after Kevin Anderson impeded Thomas Logan.

Banbridge again responded positively with Stephen Acheson heading against the crossbar from a corner.

The visitors did pull a goal back with five minutes left courtesy of Stephen McCavitt's excellently executed 25-yard free-kick with left Jason Craughwell flailing.
