QUEEN'S HIT FOUR TO STAY TOP

Queen's University maintained their lead at the top of the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League with victory over Newington at The Dub.

The Students made a typically fast start, opening the scoring after just five minutes when Matt Hughes let fly from outside the box with a left-foot shot which nestled in the opposite top corner giving keeper Jason Craughwell no chance.

As the half progressed Newington came more into the game and equalised on 34 minutes through Anthony McGonell's well struck free-kick.

Just before the break Hughes broke clear on the left but his close range shot was well saved by Craughwell.

Newington were well in the game now and in the second half Queen's keeper Declan Brown made two very good, important saves.

Just after the hour, Hughes played Ciaran O'Hare in and he shot past Craughwell to restore home advantage. Three minutes later Chris Middleton blasted a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner and with eight minutes left Ryan McCready burst down the centre, rounded Craughwell and tapped into the empty net.

Newington had the final say when Kevin Hughes' powerful left footer found the far corner of Brown's goal.
