Newry City secured at least a promotion play-off spot with this scoreless Friday night draw with Portadown at The Showgrounds.

The first half produced few chances, although both sides did have their opportunities with City being thwarted by Ports 'keeper Chris McGaughey on a couple of occasions when both Dara Noonan and Stephen Hughes connected with John Boyle free-kicks.

For Portadown Adam Salley sent in a curling free-kick but home 'keeper Steven Maguire did well to respond while Chris Lavery later broke on the counter-attack but couldn't keep his shot on target.

Portadown came closest to breaking the deadlock after the break when Ross Lavery threatened from a Niall Henderson free-kick only for the ball to drop wide.

Ultimately, however, chances were at a premium with Newry doing enough to earn the point they needed while Portadown ended the game with ten men after Jamie Douglas' second caution with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
