MALLARDS OFF TO FLYING START

After a six year absence, Ballinamallard United returned to the Bluefin Sport Championship and started with a comfortable victory over Limavady United at Ferney Park.

The only remaining member from their Championship winning squad, and captain for the day, Jason McCartney, opened the scoring on 38 minutes with a classy finish across goal after good work by Ryan Campbell.

After the restart the home side started brightly and they thought they had a second when Nathan Cashel bundled the ball into the net, but it was ruled out for handball.

On his return to the club, Campbell netted a fine solo goal with 61 minutes played, twisting and turning before slotting into the bottom right hand corner.

One of Limavady's few efforts on target came from an Emmet Friars header, but debutant goalkeeper John Connolly was able to match his opponent with an excellent save down to his left on 85 minutes.

In added time, the Mallards notched up a third when Academy graduate and debutant Sam Robb teed up Joshua McIlwaine, who showed composure to slot the ball past goalkeeper Paul Wells.
