HW Welders inflicted a first defeat in six games upon Ballinamallard United at Tillysburn Park.

The Mallards might have opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes when Nathan Cashel teed up Robbie Hume but his shot was tipped wide for a corner.

And moments later the visitors came close again when Jason McCartney's crossfrom the right was nodded off the line by Welders defender William Armstrong.

Despite these opportunities, it was the Welders that grabbed the advantage when, after half-an-hour, Scott Davidson crossed from the right for Matthew Ferguson to rise highest to head home.

However, Ballinamallard got back on level terms just seven minutes later when Cashel reacted quickest to touch home the loose ball after Welders keeper Matthew Anderson parried Ryan Campbell's initial effort.

John Connolly came to Ballinamallard's rescue on the hour when he snuffed out a promising Welders attack on the line but he was powerless on 76 minutes when Ferguson grabbed his second of the game with a drive into the bottom corner after working his way down the left wing before cutting in to finish.

Ferguson was then denied his hat-trick with just over five minutes remaining when Connolly produced a superb fingertip save to keep the ball out.
