Jason McCartney, opened the scoring for Ballinamallard United (Picture: Jonathan Porter/

BALLINAMALLARD extended the gap at the top of the table to eight with this victory over Larne.

Larne had beaten the Mallards earlier in the season at Inver Park but they were unable to complete the double as goals from Jason McCartney and Steve Feeney were enough to earn the Fermanagh side yet another victory.

Steve Feeney had two excellent chances in the first period to give the Mallards the lead, but the ex-Sligo Rovers player was first denied by Brian Neeson after a tame shot before he then looked certain to score on 24 minutes, only to shoot wide.

The Mallards were awarded a penalty on 39 minutes after Andy Crawford had been fouled in the box and Jason McCartney made no mistake as he fired the ball high into the top left hand corner. Feeney did score immediately after the break however.

Jason McCartney produced an excellent solo run from midfield and then dinked the ball to the back post for Feeney to bundle the ball into the net.

Larne Captain Allen Reid scored a fine solo goal on 80 minutes which made for a nervy finish but the Blues held on for victory and remain league leaders.
