NEWRY City kept hold of their 100% start to the season with a two goal win over Ballinamallard at Ferney Park and remain top of the table having also recorded four clean sheets in a row.

Mark Hughes made no mistake on 25 minutes when indecisiveness between the Ballinamallard centre backs allowed him to nip in and give City the lead.

Leon Carters headed narrowly past the post for the Blues and Fergal Murphy saved well from Marty Haveron in what was an even first half.

Pat McGibbon's men started the second half well and perhaps should have had two goals within ten minutes of the restart.

On 50 minutes Steven Hughes shot looked destined for the net but Mark Stafford got enough on the ball to deflect it over the bar and minutes later it was Davy Kee to the rescue, blocking Daniel Hughes shot.

The Mallards found it tough going against a competitive Newry City side and their only real chance of the second half fell on 74 minutes when substitute Darren Higginbotham found himself in space but Gareth Buchannan pulled off an excellent stop down low to his right.

Newry wrapped up the game on 85 minutes when Daniel Highes dispossed Leon Carters on the halfway line before racing clear and picking out Steven McCabe who headed the ball into the net and sent the Newry faithful back up the road with smiles on their faces.
