SWIFTS SINK SWANS WITH LUSTY DOUBLE
Matthew Lusty scored twice for Dungannon Swifts as they overcame Newington in the First Round of the BetMcLean Cup.
After a lively opening it was the home side that struck first, as good work from Adam Glenny allowed Matthew Lusty the opening to put the Swifts in front after 21 minutes.
The Swifts had looked comfortable, but it was the Championship leaders who struck back six minutes into the second half when Robbie McVarnock scored with a stunning long range effort as he caught Dunne off his line to drop the ball over the head of the goalkeeper from 40 yards.
Dungannon came back to life and regained their lead on 66 minutes through Thomas Maguire, as he arrived in style at the back post to powerfully meet Ethan McGee’s pinpoint cross and fire home.
The game was sealed for Dungannon Swifts with 72 minutes gone, as Newington goalkeeper Marc Maybin couldn’t hold Joe Moore’s effort which was parried out only as far as the onrushing Matthew Lusty who was on hand to fire home his second of the evening.
Joe Moore hit the post for the Swifts late on, as they failed to add further to their score – but held on for their place in the next round.
