LARNE BREAK DOWN RESILIENT ROESIDERS
An unlikely Kofi Balmer double set Larne on their way to progress past a resilient Limavady United in the BetMcLean League Cup.
Limavady United failed to be overawed by their Premiership opponents at Inver Park during a first half in which they limited the Invermen to a number of half-chances.
The deadlock was finally broken in first half stoppage time, substitute Kofi Balmer, who had replaced the injured Albert Watson mid-way through the half, headed home a corner to put Larne in front against the resilient Roesiders.
Larne turned up the pressure in the second half and began to show their class, the second goal came on 63 minutes as John Herron found space to nod home Andy Scott’s cross past Paul Wells.
Within six minutes, the third was added to the Larne scoresheet – Matty Lusty’s direct charge on goal teed up recent signing Thomas Oluwa to bag his first goal in the red shirt.
The home side continued to threaten, and another set-piece marked the undoing of Limavady United with Kofi Balmer bagging his second goal – once again heading in a corner to make it 4-0.
Comfortable progression for Tiernan Lynch’s side into round three of the League Cup – and all eyes will be on bringing the trophy to Inver Park this season for the first time in the history of the competition.
