RANGERS TAKEN TO EXTRA-TIME
Carrick Rangers needed extra-time to defeat Championship opponents Dergview to reach the last 16 of the BetMcLean Cup.
Although scoreless after 90 minutes, Rangers might have moved in front inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour when Ben Tilney's fierce strike from the edge of the box went wide of the far post.
Dergview had a chance just after the half-hour mark but Jamie Browne saw the ball plucked away at his feet by keeper Matthew Skeet after he had got in behind the home backline.
Moving into the second half, the sides still couldn't be separated but Carrick came close on a couple of occasions. Jordan Gibson was twice denied in quick succession by Alan Buchanan while, with a minute of normal time remaining, Stewart Nixon's cross was headed against the crossbar by a Dergview defender.
The visitors moved in front on 96 minutes. Shea Devlin was picked out in space after breaking clear of the defence and fired beyond Skeet into the bottom corner.
Carrick levelled right at the end of half-time in extra-time after Gibson chipped home from a long ball forward.
Then, a minute after the short interval, Carrick skipper Mark Surgenor edged Stuart King's side in front with what proved to be the winner with a powerful finish beyond Buchanan.
