LURGAN BLUES SURVIVE EARLY SCARE

Glenavon survived an early scare against Portstewart to advance to the next round of the BetMcLean League Cup at Mourneview Park.

It was the Seahawks who took a shock early lead after just three minutes, goalkeeper James Taylor conceded a penalty which Ryan Doherty dispatched.

The visitors lead lasted just nine minutes as Glenavon got back on level terms when Conor McCloskey headed home a cross from Paddy Burns.

After an onslaught of pressure by the home side, they took the lead on 22 minutes and Burns again was the provider, with this back post cross headed home by James Singleton.

Glenavon added a third just before half-time, as Paddy Burns conjured another delivery to the back post which Andy Hall tapped home from close range.

The second half proved less eventful with just one further goal coming right at the end when Burns scored directly from a corner as Glenavon comfortably held out for a place in the third round of the competition.
