NEWRY CITY LADIES TOPPLE UNDEFEATED BLUES

The undefeated league leaders arrived at the Newry Showgrounds for a mouth watering top of the table clash on a perfect summers evening.

Linfield, Newry games have always been tight encounters and this was no exception.

Newry started off with the sun at their backs, hoping to catch the Linfield defence off guard, but it took a bit of individual magic to open the scoring. Amanda Gomes took on the defence and stepped inside to drive home from the edge of the box.

Linfield seemed a bit rattled at this stage and the quick movement of the ball to the forward line made them uneasy. The home side now had lots of territorial advantage and were starting to create chances.

Moya Feehan then tamely shot from inside the box which was easily saved by the Linfield 'keeper.

Linfield started to exert some pressure on Newry and created a few of their own chances, with McGuinness going close with a lobbed shot and McCarron shooting wide from long range.

The visitors had a few corners and always looked dangerous from the set pieces. Then up stepped Ali Smyth with another one of her spectacular goals. Her second this year against Newry.

Newry now seemed a bit rattled and were starting to lose a bit of shape, with half time coming at the right time for them.

The second half started with great intensity and the next 45 minutes could only be described as a titanic battle from 22 committed players.

This was a great advertisement for the game.

Linfield had some early pressure in the second half but Newry came back into the game as time progressed, winning battles in every department and forcing Linfield into mistakes.

The winning goal came after a long ball to Mackin from Feehan, which saw Mackin win the race to the ball, as she guided it passed the out coming keeper.

Newry ensured that there was only going to be one winner at this stage, with their tackling and intensity of play.

This win for Newry puts them top of the league and keeps them in the title hunt and sets up for a mouth watering second half to the league.
