Ballymena United Allstars welcomed Newry City Ladies to the Ballymena Showgrounds and it was the visitors who were out of the blocks quickest.

Aimee Mackin opened the scoring on seven minutes, running straight through the Ballymena defence to bury the ball in the bottom left corner.

Newry cranked up the pressure, and were rewarded on 19 minutes when the ball reached Rayza de Souza who cut in to the right hand side of the box, her shot finding the back of the net.

Enjoying plenty of possession, Newry City continued to press the Ballymena backline. Hannah Henderson conceded a penalty following a foul on Aimee Mackin and Elenize Belem made no mistake from the spot on 31 minutes.

The visitors scored their fourth goal of the half on 38 minutes when Ballymena failed to clear a Newry throw in and Rayza de Souza had a straight forward tap in for her second of the match.

After the break a much improved Ballymena side emerged in the second half. On 56 minutes, Alison Smyth was fouled on the outside of the box and taking the resulting free kick herself, her inch perfect strike pulled a goal back for the Sky Blues.

Newry’s four-goal cushion was restored on 63 minutes when the ball reached Amanda Gomez Dias and she scored with a fine shot from just inside the box.

Both teams continued to work hard in search of more goals but neither could convert any more chances.
